1998. Twenty-two-year-old Mina is moving to the US from Bangalore to begin a new life with her husband. Then there’s a horrific murder and her life is turned upside down. Mina’s best friend Neelu helps her out of the abyss.
Mina gradually leaves her past behind and settles into a new life in the US. Years later, she is forced to return to India and is confronted by the demons from her past. In her fragile mental state, she is unable to support Neelu in her time of need. Their friendship hits rock bottom. Mina goes back to the US and faces further hurdles, this time on the work front. She tries to make amends with Neelu, but their friendship ends with Neelu accusing Mina of something unimaginable related to the murder.
Something, that deep down, Mina knows is true…
Will Mina redeem herself? Will the people she loves forgive her for what she did?
This is a story about a girl named Mina who is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, haunted by the incidents in her past. Being haunted by your mistakes is a fate far worse than death. Nightmares about the murder of her mother disturbed her life and she keeps blaming herself for her death. The author has maintained good suspense about the murder of Mina’s mother in the first part. But in the second part of the book, story looked like drifted and stretched unnecessarily. The story takes a different flow in the latter half and becomes more like a Bollywood story where two old friends get torn apart cause one blames the other for his/her current bad situations and again they reunite at the end due to the dramatic accident happened to one of them and other comes for help.
Title and cover of the book is apt as every page of the book answers to what Mina did in the situations clouded with nervousness, distress and despair.
The preconception and thoughts of Indian parents about marriage and perfect partner are also described in the book. The relation between Mina and Neelu is well depicted and shows the characteristic of ideal friendship. Language is simple and sweet. You’ll confront many unfamiliar words if you’re a beginner. The writer has surely played well in character development and detailed description of scenarios. I personally liked her writing style and narration. Feelings of anxiety, joy, nervousness were felt real while reading.
Overall it was a good read but could have been more interesting if the story has adhered to the main plot.
